Can I bring my family?
Yes. The 2009 Austin Money Show is a family-friendly interactive expo and workshop. There will be many activities for school aged children, and especially teens, focusing on smart money management, entrepreneurial job ideas using the Wii and other gaming platforms, music, online bulletin boards, and more. See the full listing of activities here . Families, friends, coworkers, teachers, ministers, employers are all encouraged to attend and participate.

What kinds of activities will there be for kids?
The Austin Money show will feature a interactive marketplace with a variety of exhibits and workshops designed specifically for young people. Older elementary students and middle-schoolers will love the Junior Achievement Finance Park a simulated, interactive community complete with a bank, town center, retail stores and more where they can learn about everything from housing and transportation to insurance, health care and entertainment.

Who is IBAT, and why are they producing the 2009 Austin Money Show?
Registration (admission) fees support financial literacy research and student financial education programs in Texas under the auspices of the IBAT Education Foundation, the educational nonprofit arm (501c-3) of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas. IBAT is a trade association representing more than 500 community banks in this state. It is headquartered in Austin. The Foundation mission is to build financially literate communities across Texas in a measurable way that ultimately will help raise the Texas credit score from the lowest in the nation. The Foundation supports and promotes the work of Junior Achievement of Central Texas.

More surprising facts…*

  • Less than half of adults (42 percent) keep close track of their spending?
  • Nearly 16 million adults (7 percent) don’t know how much they spend on food, housing, and entertainment, and do not monitor their overall spending?
  • 26 percent, or more than 58 million adults, admit to not paying all of their bills on time.
  • In the last 12 months, 15 percent of adults, or nearly 34 million people, have been late making a credit card payment?
  • More than 13 million adults (6 percent) report that their household carries credit card debt of $10,000 or more from month to month?
  • Of the more than 94 million people, currently have a home mortgage, 28 percent say that the terms of their mortgage somehow turned out to be different than they expected?
  • Only 23 percent are now saving more than they did a year ago because of the current economic climate?
  • Nearly half (48 percent) of Gen Y adults- more than any other age group- report having no savings?
  • 57 percent of adults report spending less than they were a year ago?
  • In spite of it being free, nearly two-thirds (64 percent), or 144 million people, have not ordered a copy of their credit report in the past year?
  • One-third of adults (33 percent), or more than 74 million people, do not put any part of their annual household income toward retirement? This is up from 28 percent in 2008.
  • More than one in 10 adults (13 percent), or more than 29 million people, do not have medical insurance (and this number grows to 20 percent among Gen Y adults)?
